New Anesthesia Procedure At Knapp

results in better pain relief after knee surgery.

The femoral nerve is responsible for the majority of sensation in and around the knee. This technique blocks the feeling around the nerve for a time creating numbness to the operated leg and knee. The result is reduced pain for the patient for a period after surgery.

The femoral nerve block will not replace the need for anesthesia during the knee surgery, nor will it fully alleviate the need for oral or IV pain medication, but it is an effective weapon for pain control after surgery.

Traditional pain management techniques for reducing the discomfort patients have after knee surgery has been with narcotic medication that may result in nausea, vomiting, and an array of other side effects.Another commonly used technique for postoperative pain control is the epidural that numbs both legs after surgery for several hours making rehab difficult.

The femoral nerve block only numbs the knee that received the surgery. This results in more focused pain control for the localized area, instead of numbness throughout both lower extremities.

Studies have shown that the pain-relieving properties from the femoral nerve block last much longer than other forms of anesthesia. This benefits the patient during the rehabilitation process after knee surgery.

Other patient advantages from the femoral nerve block include a reduced need for pain medication and reduced complications from those pain medications, as well as less anesthesia during surgery.

As with any medical procedure, patients should discuss pain management options, risks and side effects with their surgeon and anesthesiologist before surgery.
