Emergency Generator Power Chugs Along During Hurricane
Knapp Medical Center did not have generator failure as was reported in the newspaper. Knapp lost the normal supply of public electrical power, as did many other hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley, due to Hurricane Dolly. And, like all the other hospitals, Knapp’s emergency generators ran essential hospital functions. The blowing rain shorted one of the four Knapp emergency generators. At least one other hospital lost an emergency generator as well. The areas supplied by the malfunctioning generator were switched to another generator. Manual processes worked well until power was restored. Three of Knapp’s emergency generators never stopped, and the fourth generator was brought back online a few hours later. Steps are already being taken to insure that blowing rain does not interrupt any of the generators’ function at Knapp in the future.
