James A. Summersett, III

President & CEO
Knapp Medical Center

James A. Summersett III has held the position of President and CEO of Knapp Medical Center since December 2005. Jim has over 30 years of health care administration experience. He has previously served as CEO of various Medical Centers in Texas, Arkansas and Florida.

Jim was born and raised in San Antonio and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio and his Master of Science in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He is active in numerous state and national professional organizations and maintains Fellowship status in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Texas Hospital Association, is Chairman-Elect for HOSPAC and is a State Delegate of the Regional Policy Board for the American Hospital Association.

Jim and his wife, Allison, have three grown children.

Dinah L. Gonzalez

Executive Vice President
Chief Financial Officer

Dinah Gonzalez is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. As Chief Financial Officer, Mrs. Gonzalez will be responsible for the overall fiscal leadership and for all financial services departments at Knapp. She recently joined Knapp Medical Center in the Summer of 2011.

Dinah has 27 years of healthcare financial management with more than nine years of experience as a Chief Financial Officer and 18 years in other financial leadership roles. Her experience comes from both for profit and not for profit healthcare organizations. Prior to joining Knapp Medical Center, Dinah was the Chief Financial Officer of Doctors Hospital of Laredo and served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the Heart Hospital of San Antonio, Regional Corporate Controller for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health Care and Corporate Controller for Baptist Health System in San Antonio.

Dinah received a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Houston. She is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Texas.

Dinah and her husband Alan have one son.

Madonna Coughenour

RN, BA, BSN, MNc, CRRN
Senior Vice President
Chief Nursing Officer

Madonna Coughenour has been the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Knapp Medical Center since December of 2007. At Knapp she oversees all nursing departments and other clinical departments such as Cardiopulmonary, Diabetes Center, Rehabilitation Services and Wound Care.

She came to Knapp from Redlands Community Hospital in California where she had worked since 1996 with over five years as the Redlands Vice President of Nursing/CNO. A highly experienced nurse and administrator, Redlands was the longest tenure for Coughenour as her husband, now a retired U.S. Army Colonel, was transferred frequently for his military duties.

Coughenour has a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree and is currently completing a Masters of Nursing degree from the University of Dundee. She also has a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the California Pacific University, an AIT Certificate from the California Long Term Care Administrators Program, and is a Certified Rehabilitation RN by the American Rehabilitation Association.

She and her husband, Ray, have two sons.

Keith King

Senior Vice President
Support Services

Keith King is the Senior Vice President for Support Services. He has been at Knapp Medical Center since July of 1984. He provides executive leadership for Materials Management, Central Supply, Nutritional Services, Engineering, Environmental Services, Medical Office Buildings and Construction Services Departments.

Keith received a Bachelors of Business Administration degree from Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. He has over 28 years of experience in supply chain and facility support services management. Serving as President of the Texas Association of Hospital Materials Management Society in 2001, King received the E.W. Gerhke Award in 2002 from TAHMMS. He was a founding members of the first Valley group purchasing organization, the Lower Rio Grande Hospital Purchasing Group. He served on the leadership team when Knapp Medical Center received the 2005 Thomson Reuters Performance Improvement Leader Top 100 Hospitals recognition.

He and his wife, Linda, have two sons.

Emmett Craig

Vice President
Chief Human Resources Officer

Emmett Craig is the Vice-President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) of Knapp Medical Center. He started in July of 2007. As CHRO, Craig is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all areas of human resources at Knapp including, compensation/benefits, recruitment and retention, and organizational development. He came to Knapp with over 15 years experience in human resource leadership roles.

Craig earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts from Texas A&M University. He has been active in the Texas Society of Healthcare Human Resources Administrators and Educators and served as the Society’s President and Chairman in 2003-04.

Ruben Garza

Vice President
Administrative Services

Ruben Garza is Vice President of Administrative Services. He worked at Knapp Medical Center from May 1974 to 1976 and then returned in May of 1980. He serves as executive leader for a variety of services including Corporate Compliance, Quality Management, Risk Management, Imaging Services, Safety/Security, Case Management, and outlying Clinics

Ruben received a Diploma/Certification as a Physician Assistant with a specialization in Radiology from the University of Kentucky. He currently serves as the Board Vice-Chair of the Trauma Advisory Council Area V, and has been recognized by the Texas Governor for his outstanding leadership role in healthcare trauma. For 17 years, he served as a faculty member of the University of Texas Brownsville.

Ruben and his wife, Pam, have two daughters. He attends the First Baptist Church of Weslaco where he serves on the Deacon Council. He has served on many church committees and is a past Church Treasurer. Currently, he is member of the Mid Valley Camp of The Gideons International.

Gary Light

Vice President
Chief Information Officer

Gary Light is Vice President and Chief Information Officer. He joined Knapp Medical Center in January 2007 and provides executive leadership for the Center’s division of Information Technology. In this role, he has guided the replacement of the Hospital Information System software and is on a course towards achieving a fully Electronic Medical Record within the hospital in patient and physician clinic settings.

Prior to joining Knapp, Gary served for 13 years as Chief Technology Officer for the Capital Region Healthcare system at Concord Hospital where he was responsible for the technology centers of the Information Systems division. His other notable career positions include serving 5 years as a Consulting Manager for Keane, Inc., where he managed client engagements in the Healthcare, Insurance, and Manufacturing industries.

Gary completed his Bachelors of Engineering at the State University of New York’s Maritime Academy where he also received his commission as an officer in the US Naval Reserve. He completed additional studies at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) including their CIO Boot Camp in 2006.

He is an active member of numerous professional organizations including CHIME and the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and presently serves as a Board Member for McKesson’s Physician Practice Solutions.

Originally from upstate New York, he and his wife Cathy, have two sons.

Becky McDaniel

Vice President
Physician Services

Becky McDaniel is Vice President of Physician Services. She joined Knapp Medical Center in October of 1978 and serves as an essential link between the Executive Leadership Team and Medical Staff to promote and enhance good communications and a positive working relationship.

Becky graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Administration from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She has been a Registered Health Information Administrator since 1978 and a Certified Professional Medical Staff Manager since 1985. Becky has served on the Board of Directors, on the Membership Committee and as Program Chair for the Texas Society of Medical Staff Services. She is a member of the American Health Information Management Association and National Association Medical Staff Services. Becky served on the leadership team when Knapp Medical Center received the 2005 Thomson Reuters Performance Improvement Leader Top 100 Hospitals recognition.

Becky and her husband, Don, have two children.

Debby Rektorik

Vice President
Business Development

Debby Rektorik is Vice President of Business Development. She joined Knapp Medical Center in May 1978 and provides executive leadership for Communications & Public Relations, Marketing, Guest & Volunteer Services, Strategic Planning, Physician Recruitment and Philanthropy.

A Weslaco native, she worked as a reporter, photographer and then news editor for three years at the Mid Valley Town Crier before joining the Knapp staff.

Debby graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas in 1974. She was elected president of the Texas Society for Health Care Public Relations and Marketing in 1990 and received certification status from what is now the Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development in 1996. A community volunteer, Debby was named the Weslaco Area Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year for 2003. She served on the leadership team when Knapp Medical Center received the 2005 Thomson Reuters Performance Improvement Leader Top 100 Hospitals recognition.

Currently, she is an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Weslaco and serves as Registration Chair for the Mid Valley Unit of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Debby and her husband, Bob, have two children.
