COURSE DESCRIPTION

The science of medicine is forever changing. Outcomes of medical research and best evidences in clinical practice cause a paradigm shift which overtime results to changes in clinical interventions, drug therapy, treatment modalities and diagnostic approaches. The 18th Annual Rio Grande Valley Medical Education Conference & Exposition is designed to provide primary care physicians with concise and authoritative information on the most up-to-date treatment of problems frequently encountered yet conundrums in practice. Great efforts were taken to select faculty who are in the cutting edge in medical research, practice and education to present lectures and provide in-depth understanding of the most current medical therapy, novel treatment and diagnostic approaches to fill in the "practice gaps". Educational methods used to present the subject matters selected will include: lectures, case studies, audiovisual presentation, course syllabi, and audience participation during questions-and-answers sessions.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The 18th Annual Rio Grande Valley Medical Education Conference & Exposition with its theme, "Reaching New Horizons" is primarily designed for primary care physicians and medical practitioners in the following specialties: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN, surgery, emergency medicine and infectious diseases. The content is also appropriate for advanced nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

From each presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Review the pathophysiology, current epidemiologic data of disease processes where practice gaps-may it be knowledge, competence, or patient outcomes had been identified, and their implications on current practice of the primary care physician;
  • Acquaint with recent guidelines for diagnoses and management of patients; identify disease markers and characteristics on patient; and
  • Relate the science behind current standards of medical care and clinical management along with the associated issues like medico-legal and/or ethical.

IDENTIFICATION OF LEARNING NEEDS

The learning needs for this conference were identified from summaries of written evaluations provided by previous participants along with their comments and requested topics for future offering.
