New Year’s baby delivered at award-winning Knapp Women's Center

Weslaco – The first baby of the new year – and of the new decade – was born in the Mid-Valley on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2020 at 7:34 a.m. at the award-winning Women’s Center at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.

Baby AJ Fuentes was also the first baby to be born during a new century in Weslaco … as the City of Weslaco turned 100 years old in December, 2019.

Baby AJ’s mother, Jeanette Fuentes of Mercedes, said she was surprised and “real excited” about having the first baby of the new year -- especially since AJ is her first-born son.

The New Year’s baby was delivered by Sandra Rodriguez, CNM, DNP, Certified Nurse Midwife with the office of Dr. Annabelle Lopez. The mother was grateful to her and to the other healthcare professionals at Knapp Medical Center.

“Thank you to all the nurses who took care of both my baby and myself,” Ms. Fuentes said.

As the only acute care hospital in the Mid-Valley, Knapp Medical Center provides maternity care for women in an attractive and convenient setting, away from traffic, at 1401 E. 8th Street in Weslaco. The Knapp Women’s Center includes the Mid-Valley’s only certified Level II Neonatal Nursery.

Recently, Knapp Medical Center was named one of only 12 hospitals in the entire state of Texas to receive all three of the “Women’s Care Specialty Excellence Awards” awarded by Healthgrades, an online resource for information about hospitals. The three awards were for obstetrics and gynecology, labor and delivery, and gynecologic surgery.

Knapp also offers free childbirth classes to help educate expectant parents regarding the labor and delivery process, pain management options, newborn care, breast-feeding, nutrition, and exercise, as well as free infant car seat classes.
