Emergency Care

Knapp Medical Center’s Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Emergency Department medical team consists mainly of physicians and nurses who are specially trained for emergency medicine. This emergency team is specifically trained to treat all types of medical emergencies. Some of the most common are:

  • Heart Attacks
  • Burns
  • Strokes
  • Injuries from automobile accidents
  • Injuries from accidents at home or at work
  • Violence-related injuries
  • Poisonings

Advanced Level III Trauma Center

Knapp Medical Center has been designated a Level III Trauma Center by the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide resuscitation, stabilization, assessment and treatment to injury victims.

What Happens When I Arrive at the Emergency Department?

When you arrive, you will meet with a member of the emergency triage team who will evaluate your condition and assign you to the most appropriate area of the department. It is very important that the most seriously ill and/or injured persons be treated first.

Creating a record of your visit is necessary. After being evaluated and/or treated, you will be asked to complete some forms that primarily ask for you personal health information and your medical insurance coverage. All information you provide to the emergency care personnel is protected by the HIPPA privacy law.

Length of Stay

Every effort is made to provide prompt care but you may have to wait before you are seen by a medical professional. There are a variety of reasons for this. The most common reason is that other patients may need to be treated first due to a more serious injury or illness. You may also have to wait for procedures such as x-rays and laboratory test, and the results can take a while to be obtained and reviewed. Your patience is always appreciated.

Family members of patients are important both to our patients and our staff.

To provide efficient emergency treatment and a safe environment, only one visitor may be with a patient at a time. (Two parents are allowed for minor children after the initial medical evaluation is completed.)

The emergency medical team will keep family members in the waiting area informed and up to date with the patient’s condition and progress.

After Your Visit

You will be given instructions for follow up care prior to your discharge. It is very important that you understand and follow these instructions accurately. If you do not understand the instructions or have any questions about them-ASK! Patients are responsible for their own care after they leave the ED. Patients are also responsible for and are strongly encouraged to arrange follow-up appointments with their regular physicians. The Emergency Department can refer patients to appropriate specialists for follow-up care if necessary.
