About Our ER Wait Time

ER wait time is the average wait time for a patient to see a registered nurse during the triage (evaluation) process in our ER. After patients are triaged (evaluated), they are seen by qualified medical professionals in priority order, according to their medical condition and reason for the visit. Times are approximate and provided for information purposes only.

For life-threatening emergencies call 9-1-1

Let us know if you’re coming. Select your emergency room arrival time and wait at home until your time to be seen.

At Knapp Medical Center, we strive to make it easier for you to handle life’s unexpected events. This service is just one more way that we are transforming the healthcare experience.

The team is trained to treat all types of medical emergencies. Some of the most common are:

  • Heart Attacks
  • Strokes
  • Injuries from automobile accidents
  • Injuries from accidents at home or at work
  • Violence-related injuries
  • Poisonings

Advanced Level III Trauma Center

Knapp Medical Center has been designated a Level III Trauma Center by the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide resuscitation, stabilization, assessment, and treatment to injury victims. Knapp is the ONLY designated Trauma Center in the Mid-Valley area, which includes Weslaco, Mercedes, Donna, Elsa, Edcouch, Progreso, and nearby communities.

What Happens When I Arrive at the Emergency Room Department?

Patients, healthcare workers, and anyone else coming to the Emergency Room are screened at the entrance of the hospital. The screening process includes temperature checks. These screenings are performed to protect the safety of patients, staff, and the community.

After being screened, you will meet with a member of the emergency triage team who will evaluate your condition and assign you to the most appropriate area of the department. Patients with possible infectious respiratory diseases are placed in isolation rooms. The hospital follows strict guidelines to prevent infection from spreading from isolation rooms — which include separate “negative-pressure” ventilation systems.

At any emergency room, it is important that the most seriously-ill and/or injured persons be treated first.

After being evaluated and/or treated, you will be asked to complete registration forms, which may include health information and information on health insurance. Information you provide to emergency care personnel is confidential and protected by the HIPPA privacy law.

More Caring, Less Waiting

At the Knapp ER, every effort is made to provide prompt care. Depending on how many other patients are being treated in the ER, in some cases, patients may have to wait before being seen by the doctor or other medical professional. This may happen if other patients need to be treated first due to a very serious injury or life-threatening illness. In some cases, you may also have to wait for results from X-rays and laboratory tests. Knapp’s ER makes every effort to reduce waiting times. We do appreciate your patience and understanding during our busiest times.

After Your Visit

You will be given instructions for follow-up care prior to your discharge. It is very important that you understand and accurately follow these instructions. If you do not understand the instructions or have any questions about them, please don’t hesitate to ask. It is very important to arrange follow-up appointments with your regular physician(s). The Emergency Department can refer patients to appropriate specialists for follow-up care if necessary.
